44. Harry Benaly is an outstanding Navajo woodcarver. Harry works with native wood of Juniper, Aspen or Cottonwood. His 9 piece nativity is carved from Juniper and Cedar then hand-painted by his wife in glorious color. The Three Wisemen bearing gifts are typical of Navajo precious items, each figure shows the warmth of either movement or the Navajo brand of flour "Bluebird", all Navajos use. 3. In the last couple of years, New Mexico has lost one of it's master Santeros, Ben Ortega. His legacy especially of the 5' to 6' wood carvings of St. Francis are in museums and galleries around the world. His sons, daughter and grandson, thank goodness are carrying on his tradition. Nativity Santa Seonia, Jemez Pueblo
Award winning Jemez Pueblo artist Santana Seonia's delightful Nativity is typical of the Jemez artist's who use the red clay from the Jemez area. She mixes rich clay with other clays from the Pueblo to get just the color she is looking for. Many of the works of Jemez artisans are in The Smithsonian and Museums around the World. Nativity by Alan Lewis, Zuni Pueblo
93. Alan Lewis an enrolled Zuni Tribal Member, is a recognized Wood Carver known for his unique cottonwood root carving of Corn Maidens, Raven and Other styles. He was raised on the Zuni Reservation and son of the longest serving Tribal Governor, Robert E. Lewis who was also a lifelong Silversmith. Alan began carving in 1980, but focused on alabash stone and other such materials. Since 1995, he has almost exclusively carved in the traditional cottonwood root of his ancestors.
